The Turkey Club x Atari Jones Interview

Q: Who is Atari Jones?
A: Atari Jones is a chill smoker who listens to indie bands, 80s & 90s music, and appreciates good vibes. I’m 20 years old from Cleveland, OH. I got my name from smoking playing the Indiana Jones game on the Atari system.

Q: When did you start making music?
A: I started making music when I was 13, which really started out as poetry, then later progressed to adding music to words. I didn’t get serious with my music until maybe 2 years ago when I really started to find my sound.

Q: How would you describe your sound? How do you think Cleveland has influenced this sound?
A: Cleveland has influenced me to go outside the box because a lot of Cleveland artists sound the same and are scared to go out of the box. If you ask me, I’d rather make music that creates my own sound rather than sound like another. My sound, I would say, is like indie stoner raps. Real chill vibes.

Q: What makes you gravitate towards more minimalistic electronic production, while most of the rap game seems to be steering towards elaborate trap/dubstep style production these days?
A: I gravitate toward this sound because I like it. It’s fresh. It speaks to me. Yeah, trap and dubstep styles are cool, but I couldn’t listen to it everyday. Plus everyone’s doing it. I’d rather be different and stand out. There are others that will appreciate my sound, so I’ll stick to it.

Q: What is your biggest strength as a musician?
A: My biggest strength to me would be my music selection as far as beats go. I’m real picky of what makes the cut, or what beats I use to make my songs.

Q: What are you currently working on? What’s up next?
A: I’m currently working on my 4th mixtape, which will be a mixtape/album. It’s titled “W.E.I.R.D. pt.4: Sleepwalker”. WEIRD stands for (w)e (e)scape (i)n (r) (d)reams. Next is the release of some dope visuals, the release of the mixtape/album, and a bunch of shows, hopefully all over.

Q: If you could work with any living artist, who would it be? Artist that has passed?
A: If I could work with any living artist, it would probably be Sting from The Police. An artist that passed that I would work with would have to be John Lennon.

Q: If you could plan your career path after that of any artist, who would it be and why?
A: If I could plan my path I would base it off of Mac Miller, an independent artist who makes all his money, and has control over his creative process.
